KERMIT, TX-A Kermit woman is defying the violence of drug cartels to help orphans in Mexico.
For years Maritza Castillo’s family has been taking toys and basic essentials to kids in need to the Albergue Casa Horgar Orphanage in Mexico.
Due to safety issues faced in Mexico, Maritza says her parents stopped going and now she is stepping in and is determined to continue this tradition.
Maritza Castillo is always looking to lend a helping hand where it's needed, she credits her parents for this.
Six years ago Maritzas’ dad, who’s originally from Mexico, started taking items like clothing and books to kids at the Albergue Casa Horgar Orphange, because he knew what a struggle it is growing up in Mexico.
"The need is so needed that even a toothbrush alone would've been, you know, make a child happy that's how bad it is over there," said Maritza Castillo.
Maritza says instead of asking for toys on their wish lists, they ask for toothpaste, clothes and books.
While searching online for ways to give back to the community, Maritza came across the website, giveback.org, and noticed that a non-profit organization called Casa Hogar Orphange Inc. in alpine, assisted the same orphanage where her family would go donate to.
On November 1st Maritza is asking the community to come out to her charity dance at La Tropicana in Kermit, and is partnering up with the non-profit group.
The admission to get into the dance will be two gifts, one for a girl and one for a boy.
"Just any gift that people in their heart fill that these kids need. It could be clothes, just a gift that you would give anybody else for Christmas," said Castillo.
Maritza will be delivering the gifts herself along with another non-profit group in alpine in January.
Anyone who wishes to attend this dance or volunteer in any way can contact Maritza at 432-208-7658.
