In most elementary school classes children learn through writing and reading skills but, Challenge Lab uses games to engage kids.
These Coahoma Elementary School students may look like they're just having a lot of fun but they're learning at the same time.
A student can be sent to this Challenge Lab for two reasons. Either they've shown that they grasp a subject in class "They enjoyed knowing that they mastered something in class, then they could do something that's enriching but it's fun," says Principal Charlotte Stovall, or they've earned time in the lab as a reward for doing well on an assessment.
Challenge lab allows students more time to go in-depth with math and science and it's not just for kids in the "gifted and talented" program.
"This lab is for everyone," says Stovall.
Normally when a student misses class time, they fall behind but, "Because they have shown that they've mastered that particular skill they're able to leave and the teacher will look and see how much time do we have before we move on," says Stovall.
Stovall also says the possibility of going to the lab motivates kids to take that extra step and work hard.
Although this program just kicked off a week ago, the students are really enjoying being pushed to think a little differently.
