Permian Student Arrested for Gun Possession 10/9/13
October 9, 2013
Odessa - A Permian High School student is facing multiple felony charges after a horrifying discovery of weapons inside his backpack. ECISD Police found two guns, ammunition and a set of brass knuckles. Campus official’s say the situation was avoided all because someone saw something and reported it.
Students had mixed feelings about the situation as they left school Wednesday afternoon. One student said that she had heard rumors spreading throughout the school that he was going to do something like this very soon. Others were just thankful that ECISD police were there. “It’s a little bit scary that it’s so easy for people to bring guns. If the ECISD police weren’t here, we could have been seriously injured or killed.”
ECISD police were put on high alert right after a student reported to administrators that he had seen a gun inside of another students backpack. “Everybody wants to know what in the world a student is doing with a gun,” said ECISD Public Information Officer Mike Adkins.
“It’s really scary, because we don’t really know what his intentions were. As parents, we are all worried about our kids,” said one ECISD parent waiting outside the school for her child.
Police worked quickly to avoid a campus wide lockdown and actually resolved the issue within minutes of the initial call. Something officials say is all thanks to a well-oiled system. “We have trained very diligently for an active situation like this, the system and the practice has paid off and it works very well,” said Adkins. Once the situation was settled they immediately reported to all ECISD faculty as well as the parents.
Investigators are still trying to fit all the pieces of this incident together and can’t comment on whether the student was truly planning to use the weapons. Other than the felony charges, the student will also face the maximum punishment from the school district as well, which will most likely be expulsion.
ODESSA - Permian High Principal James Ramage tells us that a student CrimeStoppers tip lead to the arrest of a Permian student in possession of two guns.
A press release from ECISD says:
This afternoon ECISD police arrested a 16-year old male student at Permian High
School with two guns, ammunition, and a set of brass knuckles in his backpack.
The student is charged with 3 counts of Places Weapons Prohibited a third-degree felony and he will face the maximum administrative punishment as well.
A campus administrator received a tip about the guns, and the campus officer and principal quickly acted on it, locating the student and removing him from class without incident. Due to the nature of the information from the tip, they chose not to put the campus into a lockdown. These types of situation are always evaluated on their individual circumstances. This is an open investigation so more information is not available at this time.
As always, keeping our schools safe is our top priority and thanks are inorder for the student who tipped off administrators and the fast work of the campus administrators and campus police officers.
