ODESSA, TX-Fall sports are in full swing and local doctors say this is the time of year they see many athletes come in with injuries.
Often time parents and athletes tend to shrug off sports-related injuries or may not know whether or not their injury is serious enough to have it checked by a doctor.
Trapper O’Connell's motto is “better safe than sorry.” That's why he holds a free Sports-Injury Clinic on Thursday nights.
O’Connell says the clinic is a great way to bring awareness to parents and athletes in the community.
"Sometimes our kids are injured and they don't know whether it's a serious injury or whether it's something that can be handled at the school, or with their coaches, so we wanted to make a service where we can actually identify the injury," said O’Connell.
A doctor at the clinic performs a preliminary physician evaluation and x-ray on the athlete.
If further testing is necessary, the doctor will then have a discussion with the patient and his/her family, and recommend them to a specialist.
"We've been able to educate people giving them home exercise programs, and also an opportunity to help their parents, and really know what those injuries are and [what to] look out for," said O’Connell.
One of the tests done is a balance test, which helps determine concussions.
Trapper says research has identified balance as one of the three essentials elements in allowing athletes a safe return to play.
"Don't let anything stir you away from a situation where you may think it is a head injury, because all head injuries are serious," said O’Connell.
No matter the injury, O'Connell says it's in the athlete’s best interest to get checked out.
The clinic is held every Thursday from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the Center for Health and Wellness in Odessa.
A parent authorization form, registration form, and a HIPPA information form must be signed at the time of the examination.
