MCCAMEY-It turned out to be a gas station gun battle that left 38-year-old Upton County Sheriff’s Deputy Billy “Bubba” Kennedy dead.
50-year-old Gary David Green is a suspect in the shooting and is at Medical Center in Odessa now recovering from his own gunshot wounds. DPS tells us he faces Capital Murder charges.
The community looks on where it happened -- just before midnight, Deputy Kennedy was killed after approaching a male suspect and gunshots rang out..
"It was four shots, like boom, boom, boom and that was it,” said one McCamey woman.
Leaving Kennedy dead, killed in the line of fire. The sound of ambulances pierced through the night, bringing the male suspect to Odessa with gunshot wounds.
We don't yet know what happened--but much of the 12-hour investigation centered around a red truck, which some on scene say was reported stolen.
Even by night, it was a gruesome scene as The Texas Rangers meticulously cataloged each piece of evidence; unloading each weapon shell by shell, piecing together what might have happened.
Even surveillance video could hold clues.
“It’s a terrible, terrible loss for the community,” said Danny Molina.
McCamey looked on, flags flying in the wind, as investigators searched for answers.
Upton County says another deputy -- perhaps Kennedy’s partner -- walked away from the scene unharmed.
Sheriff’s officials will be having a press conference at their substation in McCamey this evening.
