Iran Chides Israel for Not Signing Nuclear Treaty 9/26/13
UNITED NATIONS - Iran's new president is calling on Israel to join an international treaty banning the spread of nuclear weapons.
Thursday's comments by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani come hours before a meeting that will mark the highest-level direct contact in six years between the United States and Iran over Tehran's disputed nuclear activities.
Israel is the only Mideast nation that has not signed the landmark 1979 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, and Rouhani says that has prevented the region from establishing a nuclear-free zone.
He says no nation should possess nuclear weapons.
Iran was the first nation to speak at a United Nations meeting on nuclear disarmament on the sidelines of the General Assembly.
