PRESIDIO-Presidio ISD was looking for an energy-efficient way to save money and cut electricity costs. This is the first year a new set of solar panels is up and running at the Presidio Elementary School.
The panels were installed on the new wing of the elementary school and are reported to generate 50 percent of the buildingís energy.
Superintendent Dennis McEntire tells CBS 7 that one of the biggest advantages of their solar system is that the energy will go directly to the systemís use and will not be put into the main grid for sale.
McEntire says high school students are able to help maintain some of the ground-level solar panels, gaining valuable skills that they can use upon graduation.
About 20 percent of the school districtís power now comes from solar energy.
