Five west Texas schools are preparing for homecoming this week.
As CBS 7 found, it's not uncommon for families to spend hundreds on the occasion.
While it's not a holiday like Valentines or Mother's Day, businesses say homecoming season is big part of their business.
They say more extravagant, the better.
"Some like to add triple mums or even bigger. We've done one that's over the shoulder," Cody Williams, manager at Mark Knox Flowers said.
Williams says they spend a lot of time preparing for homecoming.
"It's a big part of our business," he said. "We prepare far in advance. We've started a month early."
The demand is high for these pieces of tradition. Mark Knox Flowers have started taking orders for Permian and OHS homecoming, that’s still a month away.
The more detailed, the more expensive.
“They've very detail oriented, they do take some time," Williams said.
A single mum here starts at $75, but it's not uncommon in this day and age to shell out $300 dollars or more.
"The more glitz, the better they are," Williams said.
There's no telling how big and costly this tradition will continue to become.
Showing your school spirit isn't just for current students anymore. Businesses are now even making mini mums for toddlers and wrist mums for parents; making it an event for the whole family.
