Agency Seeks Halt to Colorado River Water Releases 9/19/13
AUSTIN, Texas- The agency that regulates water levels of the Colorado
River lakes in Central Texas will ask the state to allow a halt lake water
releases downstream to Matagorda Bay.
By a 9-6 vote Wednesday, the Lower Colorado River Authority board decided to
ask the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to waive temporarily
requirements for water releases from the Highland Lakes.
The releases are required to maintain the health of the coastal bay's
ecosystem. However, the LCRA contends the water to be released is especially
vital to Central Texas with a drought leading to historically low water levels
in the lakes.
Also, LCRA General Manager Becky Motal announced she'll retire at the end of
the year after serving 2½ years in the job and 27 years with the LCRA.
