Kent Kwik Ad Stirs Up Controversy 9/17/13
September 17th, 2013
There’s no doubt the advertisement makes you look twice, but some say the ad showed poor judgment.
Kent Kwik owner Bill Kent says life's too short to be so serious and the ad was only meant to encourage people to apply and have a few laughs.
“Do you think it was appropriate do you think it's funny?” CBS 7 asked one shopper in the mall
“Well I didn't laugh," she said.
"Are they trying to say that it's ok that you don't pass your drug test there?" asked another shopper.
One man laughed when we showed him the advertisement.
“Yeah, it's pretty funny," he said.
Clearly, it gets people’s attention,
"You know, they'll go back and say did I read what I think I read," said one shopper.
“The ad, which was, published in the Midland Reporter Telegram this weekend reads:
I don't usually apply for jobs but when I do its' for Kent Kwik.”
Then in parentheses says:
“and then I usually fail my drug test”
"It's hard to get people, it's hard to find good people and the fact that people are talking about it, that's a good thing," said Kent Kwik owner Bill Kent.
"Bad taste," said another man we showed the ad to.
"It kind of implies that if you go apply there and fail your drug test, it's ok you can still work there," was another shoppers reaction.
Kent Kwik says they drug test all of their employees and only hire clean workers. Drug testing in the basin is an issue. Willie Taylor of Texas Workforce Solutions says with the shortage of workers in the Basin already, having any number of workers failing drugs tests shortens the supply of available employees. That creates more of a hardship for companies desperate to get up to full staff.
