Cuban Who Was Fugitive Sentenced in Drug Case 9/17/13
McALLEN, Texas - A Cuban who fled Texas in 2003 following his
drug-smuggling arrest then turned up nearly 10 years later bound in a vehicle
has been sentenced to nearly 11 years in prison.
A federal judge in McAllen on Monday announced 46-year-old Alexis
A federal jury in July found Estevez-Alvarez, of Havana, guilty of
possession with intent to distribute marijuana and failure to appear.
Investigators in June 2003 discovered nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana in a
shed near the suspect's home in the South Texas town of Mercedes.
Estevez-Alvarez was free on bond when he disappeared.
Estevez-Alvarez last October was found restrained and inebriated in the bed
of a pickup truck at the Progreso Port of Entry. Investigators say someone drove
him into Texas, then returned to Mexico.
