Synthetic Drug Ordinance To Take Effect In 30 Days 9/11/13
September 11th, 2013
The ordinance takes effect in thirty days and the message is clear. Synthetic drugs are no longer welcome in the city.
The drugs have affected people from many walks of life, including the UTPB baseball team.
"At our first initial athletic meeting, we talk about all kinds of drugs," said baseball coach Brian Reinke.
Coach Reinke says he’s seen players hooked on them.
"Every single thing in their life goes down, their awareness, their ability to get their work done, their ability to perform on the field," he said.
He says one of the players told him he was getting the drugs from Cloud 9, a popular smoke shop in Odessa.
We spoke to the shop and they said they clearly mark it as potpourri and tell people it's not fit for human consumption.
However, Cloud 9 and other smoke shops place it next to cigar wraps and other smoking materials and Reinke says the message is clear.
"They"ll put it next to their wraps, they'll do what ever they need to do to promote it as an agent to smoke," he said.
The owner of Cloud 9 did release a stement saying in part:
"We have been compliant with any laws thus far. we sell our merchandise only to adults. we don't allow minors to enter our establishment or use the drive thru."
