CBS 7 News sat in on the City Council meeting this morning.
When the Hispanic Chamber funding item came up, the discussion was pretty divided.
Today the City Council discussed authorizing Mayor Wes Perry to negotiate a new contract with the Hispanic Chamber but this is a change from what was decided last month.
Council Member John James says he was surprised to even see this item on the agenda because in the last regular meeting they decided to delay a decision on funding until October.
James says last month a citizen's committee recommended that no money be given to the Hispanic Chamber and the City Manager chose to uphold that recommendation.
James says there are some tough conversations to have before making a final decision,
He says since the Mayor was not present today he felt uncomfortable making this decision.
Council Members John Love and Jerry Morales wanted a vote taken today on the issue.
We spoke with councilman Love who says City Manager Courtney Sharp implied that the Hispanic Chamber had made the necessary changes. He says if Sharp is satisfied, so is he.
He feels the council needs to move forward on this decision.
Both James and Love support the Hispanic Chamber's Incubator Program.
The vote to give the Mayor power to negotiate with the Hispanic Chamber was tabled.
