UPDATE: Car Found, Dallas Sexual Assault Suspect Still at Large 9/9/13
DALLAS - Police in Dallas are searching for a crime watch volunteer who's been charged in a sexual assault that investigators believe may be linked to as many as eight other attacks.
A car belonging to Van Dixson was found abandoned in a parking lot yesterday, a day after he was charged in connection with a rape and robbery that took place just south of downtown Dallas. Police say nine women, in all, have faced similar attacks in the same area since June, including six in about the last two weeks. And they say DNA evidence from at least one matched Dixson. DNA tests are still pending in the other cases.
Neighbors say Dixson would patrol the streets several times a week, presumably for his duty as a crime watch block captain. One man tells a TV station (WFAA) that he'd see Dixson walk "every night, all night."
State criminal records show he was arrested and convicted of aggravated robbery in 1993. But according to county records, he was also arrested as recently as last month on a deadly conduct charge.
