Chuck Wagon Gang Feeds Michigan Workers 9/8/13
CBS 7 News
(Odessa)- For over 70 years, the Odessa Chuck Wagon Gang has served up West Texas barbecue.
At times, the gang is even asked to travel across the U.S. and the World.
Recently, CBS 7 went along as the chuck wagon gang traveled over a thousand miles to feed the men and women who help UPS and others hit the open road.
The gang traveled to Sturgis, Michigan to feed workers at the Morgan-Olson plant.
The company was celebrating 10 years in business, making the trucks that deliver packages across the country.
Feeding 2500 people.
Chuck Wagon Gang Boss Randy Garner talked about how it works; "Day two, we're going to be pulling the beef off. We'll have all of our people here slicing the beef. Beans will go on at 4 o'clock in the morning. The sausage will be going on about 4 or 5 in the morning. All of the beef will then be sliced up and put back on the pit for warming. We start serving at 11 and feed from 11 to 2."
Here is what they served:
1500 pounds of beef, 600 pounds of beans, 120 gallons of potato salad, 104 servings of cobbler, 80 gallons of pickles, 890 pounds of sausage, 1,000 gallons of tea and 270 loaves of bread.
It was a big hit.
West Texan John Poindexter, who owns Morgan-Olson, put on the feed.
He told CBS 7: "the chuck wagon gang from Odessa, Texas is here. They come to my ranch in Presidio County every year. Cibolo Creek Ranch to produce a big barbeque on Labor Day weekend that marks the anniversary of our purchase of that property back in 1990. So in a sense doing the same thing here."
Jerry Hensley was also along for the feed.
He has taken to gang all over the world.
Russia, and the Ukraine, and Germany to name a few.
They have also fed soldiers back from battle, country music festivals and more.
Hensley says: "Everybody in the town, the city took care of us. They love the Texas Barbeque. Different than what they normally see but everyone seems to love it. We had a great time doing it and we hope we promoted Odessa, Texas in the best possible light."
