Court Files Detail County Judge's Corruption 9/6/13
EL PASO, Texas - Court documents show how a former West Texas county judge was bribed by investment bankers with envelopes full of cash and all-expense paid trips in exchange for refinancing the county's bonds with them.
The documents were unsealed after El Paso County Judge Anthony Cobos - who was the top administrative official in the county - and local businessman Lorenzo Aguilar pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and other charges this week. The plea agreement asks for a four-year prison term for the men. They and four others are scheduled to be sentenced November 27th.
Cobos was county judge from 2007 to 2010 and in that time he was bribed to steer a $40 million bond refinancing contract to the company of one of the other defendants.
