MIDLAND-Since the CAF announced a potential move of its headquarters out of Midland, new details have surfaced about a planned exhibit at the new airbase.
But what will it mean for the flagship museum right here in midland?
The CAF says the museum will not move, but a letter sent to all members confirms a new “aviation attraction” and it may include items from midland.
"What is envisioned is not a museum, but an attraction,” said Chairman of the CAF Airpower Museum’s Board of Directors Randy Wilson.
In a letter to members the CAF states, ”The new location will use the term aviation attraction as opposed to museum, as we plan to move towards the cutting edge of education, using artifacts combined with new technology to impact our visitors.”
So why not just call it a museum?
"I don't know if I have an exact answer, we have an excellent museum here, I don't see the need to have one elsewhere,” Wilson said.
In the letter to members, the CAF says some items could transition to the new location.
"Probably none that you see here, however we have a large collection in storage," Wilson said.
Museum chair Randy Wilson supports the move, saying the CAF plans to make major upgrades to the midland museum regardless.
Wilson also remembers the original move to midland.
"The move to Midland from Harlingen was quite controversial," Wilson said.
Members vote on the move Friday October 11th.
It's easy to become a CAF member, you fill out an application, pay $200 yearly dues and if you register before September 11th--you can vote on the move.
