MIDLAND, TX- As summer comes to close, local tanning salons are forced to turn away minors after a new law goes into effect, which will ban using tanning beds.
The new law went into effect yesterday, but we discovered today some businesses had long ago started following the same rule.
Even though signs in tanning salons clearly state tanning beds can lead to skin cancer, Ed Thompson, General Manager at Planet Fitness in Midland, said they make up a large portion of their business.
Thompson said Planet Fitness is on board with the new law.
“Under-age tanning is not part of a healthy lifestyle, so in order to reduce the risk of melanoma, we have made sure no one under 18 can tan here,” said Thompson.
In a report by our partners at the Texas Tribune, using indoor tanning facilities before age 18 increases the melanoma risk by 85%.
Back in 2009, the world health organization, classified tanning beds as carcinogenic, meaning they have a direct link to cancer.
The new law will impact more than just minors; it also requires businesses to keep a more comprehensive tanning history log on each customer.
Despite the health risks, Thompson said tanning beds are actually the new trend.
“We’re in the fitness industry, of course they want to look good, they want to have the perfect skin as well as the perfect body,” said Thompson.
Thompson says more gyms are offering tanning rooms.
