Williams, Azarenka, Nadal and Federer Advance 8/30/13
NEW YORK - Women's top seed Serena Williams and No. 2 Victoria Azarenka (as-ah-REHN'-kah) have advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open by winning Thursday. Williams cruised to a 6-3, 6-love victory before Azarenka posted a 6-3, 6-1 triumph to join No. 6 Carolina Wozniacki (wohz-nee-AK'-ee), seventh seed Petra Kvitova (KVIH'-oh-vah), eighth seed Angelique Kerber and No. 9 Jelena Jankovic (yeh-LAY'-nuh YANK'-oh-vihch) in Round 3.
Flavia Pennetta (FLAH'-vee-uh pehn-EHT'-uh) ousted fourth-seeded Sara Errani (ehr-RAH'-nee) 6-3, 6-1 in a second-round match for the tournament's biggest upset so far. Errani was the French Open finalist and a semifinalist at the U.S. Open last year but has made it past the second round in only one of the four majors in 2013.
Men's second seed Rafael Nadal cruised into the third round with a straight-sets victory while improving to 18-0 on hard courts this year.
Five-time champ and seventh-seed Roger Federer also won his second-round match in straight sets. Federer hasn't dropped a set through two victories.
Other second-round winners on the men's side included fourth seed David Ferrer (feh-REHR'), No. 8 Richard Gasquet (gas-KAY') and No. 10 Milos Raonic.
