PRESIDIO-US Customs and Border Protection is launching a state-of-the art “Z-Portal” scanner at its Presidio port of entry.
The Z-Portal will be able to scan vehicles for narcotics and security threats like weapons using safe and low-radiation gamma and x-ray technology.
The Z-Portal system will not identify the face, race, gender, or age of any of the passengers inside the vehicle.
US Customs and Border Protection at Presidio also just unveiled a new canopy on the southbound lanes.
Officials say it will protect both agents and the public.
"This will allow us to make it faster at the port of entry both for us and those who pass through,” said Presidio/Boquillas Port Director David Lambrix. “It will allow us to scan one vehicle every few minutes.”
They are also encouraging anyone passing through, especially with the busy labor day weekend around the corner, to look at their website at cbp.gov in advance of any border crossings.
