Civil Rights Suit Settled in NJ Police Shooting 8/28/13
DENVILLE, N.J. - The mother of Texas man who was shot and killed by a
police officer during a traffic stop in New Jersey has settled a federal civil
rights lawsuit for $400,000.
Reuben Martinez was shot five times when the Denville police officer became
trapped in the passenger seat while Martinez increased speed and refused to stop
his car in 2008.
A grand jury concluded the shooting was justified.
The Daily Record of Parsippany reports under terms of the settlement agreement, Denville denies any wrongdoing.
Martinez was living in Laredo, Texas, when the 21-year-old returned home to
attend his brother's graduation.
His driver's license was suspended in New Jersey and toxicology tests showed
he had marijuana in his blood system and a blood-alcohol level twice the legal
