Christine Steinhauer now worries about the safety of her children. Her car was broken into. Her purse was taken, along with all of her person identification cards.
“I mean I’m here all day by myself and my children. There’s nothing stopping them from deciding hey we have her address, it’s on her ID, we have keys, lets go see what else we can get,” she said.
Odessa police say they are seeing an increase in auto thefts and home burglaries in recent months.
“Recently there have been a lot and there’s a lot happening. It’s not in specific area of town, it’s happening everywhere,” said Communications Officer Steven LeSueure.
Robbers are also becoming more sophisticated.
Police say thieves that are targeting homes are first knocking on the front door and if no one answers going around to the back door and breaking in.
Odessa police tell CBS 7 robbers are going after electronics, jewelry and anything that’s in plain sight. They say keeping valuables out of sight and installing an alarm system are some of the best ways to prevent robberies.
“It was under the seat,” Steinhauer said when asked where she put the purse.
She says while she did hide her purse, she wont keep it in the car anymore and will put her id cards in a safer place.
