Fate of Woman Accused of Killing Boy Goes to Judge 8/27/13
HOUSTON - A judge has begun deliberating the fate of a woman accused in
the 2010 slaying of a 12-year-old Houston boy.
Closing arguments concluded Monday in the capital murder trial of
47-year-old Mona Nelson, who authorities say killed Jonathan Foster and stuffed
his badly burned body in a culvert. The child disappeared Christmas Eve 2010.
Prosecutors say they don't have a motive. Nelson's attorney, Allen Tanner,
has suggested that the boy's stepfather had a motive to kill because his stepson
had come between him and his wife. The stepfather has denied the allegations.
At Nelson's request, state District Judge Jeannine Barr will decide her
guilt or innocence rather than a jury. If convicted, Nelson automatically will
be sentenced to life without parole. Prosecutors are not seeking the death
