West Texas A&M: Don Carthel Responds To Firing 8/23/13
by MARSHALL HUGHES
West Texas A&M Athletic Director Michael McBroom announced Thursday that head football coach Don Carthel had been let go.
McBroom said at a news conference Thursday he and university President J. Patrick O’Brien made the decision because Carthel violated NCAA Division II Bylaw 10.1 under ethical conduct.
According to the rule, “Individuals employed by (or associated with) a member institution to administer, conduct or coach intercollegiate athletics and all participating student-athletes shall act with honesty and sportsmanship at all times so that intercollegiate athletics as a whole, their institutions and they, as individuals, shall represent the honor and dignity of fair play and the generally recognized high standards associated with wholesome competitive sports.”
McBroom said Carthel violated the rule by “knowingly furnishing or knowingly influencing others to provide false or misleading information in the course of an NCAA investigation.”
Carthel held his own press conference Friday morning and read a statement (pictured) that tells his side of the story.
