Big Spring EMS Short Six Employees 8/22/13
August 22nd, 2013
EMS workers and most of the fire department make less than fast food workers
"Yes, on an hourly basis, there are businesses in the town that pay more. But, we offer benefit packages that are second to none," said Fire Chief Craig Ferguson.
With higher pay enticing EMS workers to work elsewhere, the department finds itself short six employees. Due to the lack of staff EMS might not be able to station ambulances at local high school football games/
"It's something we regret having to do, but with the possibility of having three home football games...it's something we cannot deal with,” said Mayor Larry McLellan.
"We have an obligation to answer emergency calls and 911 calls," Ferguson said.
With the cost of living rising next year's budget will call for a six percent raise, which is expected to pass.
"It will help. I don't know if it's enough to get us to where we need to be," McLellan said.
Fire Chief Craig Ferguson hopes the raise will help fill the department and keep current staff on board.
The budget will be finalized on September 24th.
