Crane ISD’s new elementary school has been about five years in the making. Class starts Monday and while all that's left to add are a jungle gym, some fencing, and landscaping, it's what we found inside the building that made it stand out.
“We've lived with construction for the past 4 or 5 years," says Superintendent Larry Lee.
The original facility, built in the 30's, was aging but it's layout also caused security concerns.
"We had 4 or 5 elementary buildings that we used and it was very hard to keep those secure and have school at the same time."
Because of the school's land-locked location all construction was hashed out in several stages so that the school could continue while changes were made.
The two new wings are state of the art. With planning including everything from air quality to lighting, color scheme to technology.
"We didn't have to retro-fit things, we know technology was an issue so it was planned within the building instead of it being an afterthought like it is in most cases."
Now teachers are able to better incorporate technology into their lesson plans.
The most recent additions to the campus: the library and a drop-off area for students which Lee says will help parking and traffic flow.
A multi-purpose room is still in the works behind the cafeteria which should be ready in May 2014
Stone from the original building will be displayed near the entrance, keeping the school's history intact.
