MIDLAND-Imagine finding a dog barely alive inside your dumpster. This furry little friend is lucky to be alive after he was found just in time, but the story doesn't end there.
"I saw his eyes through the lid of the dumpster, I went over there and pulled him out,” said Midland Resident DJ Cook.
DJ Cook was taking the trash out when he found the dog, barely holding on, wheezing with the faintest of a bark.
"His hair is all matted down, he has a hole in his nose and puss was coming out,” DJ Cook said.
The family says there's no way the dog made it into the dumpster alone--measuring just over a foot long, he had to have been placed there.
"Up until the day that person put that dog in the dumpster to leave him to die, the dog probably loved that owner,” said Kirsten Cook.
Midland Animal Services says it's an unusual case and that it's hard to catch those responsible.
"It can mean state jail time, but without a witness it's a pretty tough case to pursue," said Midland Animal Services Manager Paul O’Neill.
Regardless, the Cook family is thankful they found him.
"We can already hear the dump truck, he probably would’ve been picked up,” said Caryn Cook. “I don’t want to think what would’ve happened to him after that.”
For now, the dog is staying at The Tall City Veterinary Clinic--the family says he's not out of the woods yet. The dog is tick infested and was laying down in his own feces for quite some time.
We will update you on the dog's condition as soon as we know more.
