Stanton Population Expected to Double Next Census 8/16/13
CBS 7 News
The oil boom in Martin County is growing just like the rest of West Texas, and with that come traffic issues.
Martin County Sheriff John Woodward II said TXDOT labeled the West Basin 2.5% more likely to have a traffic accident with an injury than any other place in Texas, and that includes Martin County
There are about 2500 people in the city of Stanton and about another 2500 in the surrounding area that makes up martin county.
Many in the community have set up in campers and mobile homes, and Sheriff Woodward says those people aren't even included in the current census.
"In 2015 our population is expected to double or triple," he said.
That growth in population will make many changes in the community.
Among them: traffic and crime.
Sheriff Woodward tells me that the crime rate isn't necessarily going up, but with the population going up, naturally so will the crime.
