Odessa City Council Passes New Parking Law 7/10/13
July 10, 2013
Odessa - A new parking law passed Tuesday night and has some Odessans up in arms. The law states that Odessa residents are no longer allowed to park their vehicles or boats on any unpaved sections of their own front lawns.
Many of the folks that we spoke to in town were surprisingly in support of the new law. One resident said, "I think it's terrible, it just ruins the look of the neighborhood."
Odessan resident Mark Kirby who is in support of the ban, told us that he can't help but wonder what his neighbors will do about the parking? “If you would've asked them and they didn't know this new law they would've been against it, because they would say where am I going to put my vehicles.”
On Facebook, many residents who have multiple cars said they are concerned that they will not have anywhere to park and don't understand why the city would approve of such a ban.
"Number one was to beautify our community and two it lowers property tax," City of Odessa Public Information Officer Andrea Goodson said.
Residents will still be able to park their vehicles and boats in their backyards with out a fence.
Goodson told us that it will be up to the discretion of the officers whether or not someone will be ticketed. The fines will be up to the court to disclose and will take effect January 1, 2014.
