Even in a booming economy, poverty is a growing issue right here in our area.
Now soup kitchens are feeling the burden as more west Texans find themselves in a financial bind.
Jesus House in Odessa is now feeding those who are less fortunate, even on Sundays.
They say the extra day was needed to meet the demand of more people dealing with the higher cost of living.
Volunteers of the soup kitchen at The Jesus House are cleaning up from another exhausting Sunday. They say in less than a year, they're feeding 50 to 60 more people a day.
Elisha Ramirez says there is a new face to poverty in the area as more young families are walking in ranging from age 18 to 35.
“It's the younger age group that breaks my heart because I fit in that age group,” Ramirez said, “We usually have more senior citizens.”
“They come in and they don't have these high wages and they're struggling to make ends meet and this is a way that we can help them supplement their income,” said Pastor Donny Kyker.
He says some so have jobs, but instead of paying for a hot meal many are focusing on getting a roof over their heads.
“When the cost of living goes up, the wages don't go up to meet that need and that's the majority of the problem that we're seeing on the streets right now,” he said.
The Jesus House opens their doors to everyone even to those who have alcohol or drug addictions.
“I’m a cancer survivor I was addicted to drugs and I just got tired of living that life,” said Dean Womack who is now a volunteer and says no matter where you are in life there is always someone to help.
“Seek God,” he said, “Everybody needs help with money, when you're hungry, or ending an addiction.”
Pastor don says they plan to continue to help the hungry physically and spiritually, and has God to thank for providing for the influx of people coming in from all over the nation.
With more mouths to feed a day there is also a need for donations.
