ODESSA-Imagine having to travel hundreds of miles to big cities like Dallas to manage your diabetes.
It's a reality for some, but now there's a new center in the basin that aims to provide the same services right here at home.
John Robinson was diagnosed with type one diabetes later in life--we caught up with him getting a checkup at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center.
"It’s scary. You’re in a state of denial at first of why me, why is this happening to me.” John Robinson.
$8 million dollars is going to expanding the center in Odessa--it will be home to a new endocrinology fellowship, one of the first in Texas to make the commitment to training specialists to manage diabetes.
"Nobody has done anything like that,” said Dr. Gary Ventolini, Dean and at the Texas Tech Univ. Health Sciences Center. “It shows that with the cooperation of the university and the hospitals and the community, we can get better care for all our patients."
The center will combine the new fellows with a one-stop-shop to manage diabetes. With multiple specialists in areas related to diabetes under one roof.
“Some have to travel to Lubbock or Dallas or Houston or San Antonio,” Dr. Ventolini said. “Under the Texas Tech umbrella we are going to be the first one to have it.”
For people like Robinson--the center will make a huge difference in their quality of life.
“Having a facility like this in place will not only help the people now but in the future,” Robinson said.
The fellows will begin this summer and the center is already expanding their clinic.
The center is located at 701 W. 5th St. in Odessa. You can contact the clinic at 432-335-2222.
