Odessa Group Pushing To Name New Elementary Schools 5/7/13
May 7, 2013
Odessa - A group of Odessa Vietnam War veterans are proposing that two new elementary schools be named after "medal of honor" recipients.
Alfred Mac Wilson and Marvin Rex Young, both Odessa natives were killed in action in Vietnam and both received the Medal of Honor after death.
"You have two 21 year old kids who consciously gave up their lives for the guys they were with that day, and if there's anyone more deserving than them. I would like to know who they are," said name change advocate Ronnie Rains.
"I feel like a community needs to recognize these individuals and what better format than to name a school for them," said Billy Brown.
The group already has a thousand plus signatures on their Facebook page and through their written petition. By naming the schools after the men, they believe they will help teach students what it really means to be a veteran.
"I think it's very important for kids to know what a veteran is and to realize these men laid down their lives for their country so that we can do the things we do and live in the democracy that we live in," said Ray McDowell.
But getting a school named is harder than just submitting a form; many names will have to go through different levels to become a serious contender.
"The committees will take what names were presented to them and then they will make a recommendation to the board at which the board gets the information on the board will be the final decision that puts it into place," said president of the ECISD school board Ray Beaty.
Beaty also says he hopes these schools will begin opening next year in West Odessa.
