West Texas Roads have become congested, as more and more people hit the roads everyday. Because of this the number of fatal crashes is up.
CBS 7 wants to take you back to Driver's Education Classes.
Every Monday throughout the month of May, we will look at different issues involving drivers in West Texas, and offer you some advice on proper techniques to keep you safe on the road.
You see them on the road everyday, whether in the city or on the highway. There are 3.5 million drivers nationwide. In West Texas, you can add cars, trucks, oilfield vehicles and equipment and you get busy streets and roadways. Officials with the OC Professional Truck Driving School say they teach safety everyday to their drivers, and while that's important, watching out for yourself is equally important.
"People are constantly pulling out in front of us. The truck is not able to stop on a dime. It's like a boulder. It can't stop," states Julie Bridges.
We went out on the road with instructor Jeff Winther, a veteran of the road having been a driver for over 25 years. We also spoke with him about issues he sees every day that can be dangerous.
Jeff: "People are speeding, not paying attention, running stop signs. It's bad out there. Just like that little red car. He didn't need to pull out there. He can wait. People just don't realize it's hard for us to stop."
It's important that you pay attention while on the road and above all stay off your phone...
Jeff: "The biggest problem I see on 42nd street is people with their phones. Texting. Oh and we need a law to stop texting. Distracted drivers are a problem; we need something to address that."
And be courteous. Slow down and drive safe
Julie: "Use common sense. Don't drive recklessly. Be cautious and remember it's hard to up and stop."
Julie Bridges with the OC Professional Truck Driving School says that some larger cities like Houston and Atlanta, to name a few, have safer roads than Midland and Odessa.
She says we should all slow down and pay attention.
Our lives depend on it.
