OPD: Pipe Bomb Found at Odessa Storage Facility UPDATE 7:30 P.M. 4/17/13
UPDATE: 7:30 P.M.
Bomb technicians have rendered safe the pipe bomb that was found inside the storage unit. In the process, technicians also found a hand grenade and have rendered it safe. Bomb technicians are still investigating the unidentified object wrapped in electrical tape and will rendered it safe. Technicians will do a cursory search of the unit to make sure there are no other questionable or explosive items.
Once the unit has been rendered safe, the Narcotic/Vice Unit will continue their investigation.
UPDATE: 6:20 P.M.
The Odessa Police Bomb Unit has removed two questionable items, a make shift pipe bomb and an object wrapped in electrical tape. The items are being evaluated at this time.
Businesses in the immediate area were advised of the situation and the evacuation was voluntarily.
People in the area including the media are to stay a minimum of thousand feet from the scene.
ODESSA - Odessa Police have just issued a release saying that they have come across what appears to be a pipe bomb:
"Officers with the Narcotic/Vice Unit executed a narcotic search warrant at the CubeSmart Self Storage Unit located at 5306 North Grandview.
While executing their search investigators came across what appears to be a make shift pipe bomb. For safety and security reasons, investigators backed away and have called for the Odessa Bomb Unit to respond. The object in question will be accessed by the Bomb Unit and disposed of properly.
At this time the Bomb Unit will access what they have."
