ODESSA-Pastor Jesse Jacob Villanueva Sr. chose to bury his 22-week old child instead of paying rent
"I was mad at God, and I was mad at the world for my daughter's death," said Villanueva.
His family literally had no place to go after being evicted from their Houston apartment, but god had a new plan for the Villanueva family. Cutting yards for free.
"On faith we packed up and I cut yards from Houston all the way to Midland. I just left with the clothes on our back in hopes of finding a brighter future."
And cut he did -- Villanueva asked for no money, taking donations of gas and food to get to the basin.
For the former prison minister, yard work is a chance to share his faith.
"I let them know to put god first because god is the only one who can soften those burdens and soften those hardened souls, and take the depression away, the drugs, addiction whatever they may be going through,” said Villanueva. “You gotta let go and let God."
Villanueva says his journey helped put his family back together and helped others along the way. One yard at a time.
"My wife was the one that took it hard and some of my clients have spoken with her, talked with her, counseled her, advised her, I just call it love and they loved on her and it brought her out of her shell,” said Villanueva.
Villanueva did find a full time job recently, as well as an apartment with help from members of his new church in Odessa—Tree of Life Community Church. But Villanueva fits in the free lawn service on weekends and hopes to expand the ministry.
