ODESSA-The Ector County Independent School District has gotten quite a bit of media attention in the last few months about its C-SCOPE curriculum.
A few students at New Tech Odessa were tasked with demystifying C-SCOPE and a number of programs in an informational video for the district.
Most of the students who worked on the project didn't know much about C-SCOPE before, and say they had not heard of any controversy.
The students did research by interviewing teachers and faculty across ECISD to create a how-to video as part of ECISD’s “Students First” initiative.
“They investigated, interviewed teachers and worked really hard to create this video,” said AP U.S. History Professor Gerardo Ramirez. “I think that there were some misconceptions about C-SCOPE and this was a way for ECISD to break it down.”
We spoke with three girls involved in the project, who each took something different away.
“C-SCOPE is used so that all teachers are teaching the same thing at the same time,” said Junior Shauna Devitt. “So if a student transfers schools they wouldn't be ahead in the class or behind, they'd be on the same level.”
Teachers say the students volunteered for the project outside of their normal class hours, using skills they picked up in a digital portfolio class.
