Odessa, TX - A man carrying a large wooden cross around town and even on busy highways is turning some heads.
Jonathan Elijah carries this 100 lbs. cross around the streets of Midland and Odessa in hopes to cross paths with passersbys. He says he is encouraging West Texans one-step at a time.
“The cross itself it shakes people’s minds it questions what they normally wouldn't question,” he said.
As you drive-by Jonathan Elijah and his large wooden cross the first question that may come to mind is why.
“It’s encouragement that Jesus is there and Jesus is available,” he said.
He says he walks 5 to 35 miles a day. Wednesday he walked from Odessa to Midland and back all in hopes it will inspire others.
“It's a symbol of the declaration to call out to people to do what they are called to do,” he said.
Jonathan says it seems like a radical act, but it’s working.
Some drivers were so touched they pulled over just to thank him.
“You get to talk to a lot of people and that what you want to do,” he said, “It's very encouraging when they come up to you and tell you how much they're encouraged especially if there are tears in their eyes.”
Jonathan says in the past he chose the wrong paths in life, but now he walks a righteous one.
A year after I got saved I asked The Lord what He wanted me to do with my life,” he said, “He took me to the scripture that said pick up your cross and follow Me.”
