ODESSA-With recent reports of dog bites in the Odessa area, a local veterinarian is speaking out about how to keep yourself and your dogs safe, especially when walking them outside.

Doctor Becky Battershell of Angel Vet Clinic says it's important to spay and neuter, which will help prevent your dog from wandering away or out of the backyard.

“Animals that aren't fixed are certainly more in danger and definitely have better chances of having problems because they want to leave the house more,” Battershell said.

Battershell says to be sure to walk your dog only in places you would feel comfortable walking through yourself.

"Obviously it's also important to use an appropriate leash when walking outside," Battershell said. "And just being aware of your surroundings goes a long way."

She says a long-term solution is the building of a dog park in Odessa and that a board is currently looking at that possibility.
