The Odessa American reports that the Midland-Odessa Transportation Alliance presented information at Thursday's Odessa Development Corporation meeting that shows crashes in Odessa are have increased 40 percent in the last two years. Fatalities from traffic accidents are up 58 percent.

"We have an enormous amount of traffic and because of that, an enormous amount of crashes and fatalities" Midland-Odessa Transportation Alliance President James Beauchamp said. "Those numbers represent 6.25 percent of crashes and 9.5 percent of fatalities in Texas"

Out of the 254 counties in Texas, Ector County was 12th for fatalities in 2012.

Mayor David Turner said those numbers don't surprise him.

"With the traffic and all the people moving in, it's hard not to notice it on the roads" Turner said.

Beauchamp estimates the cost of upgrading the road systems at $300-$400 million.
