BEAUMONT, Texas - A man has been sentenced to life in prison without
the possibility of parole after pleading no contest in the death of a Beaumont
police officer killed during a pursuit.

KFDM-TV reports (http://bit.ly/ZqNPub ) a judge Thursday sentenced
32-year-old John Wesley Nero after he pleaded no contest to capital murder in
the death of Officer Bryan Herbert (HE'-burt), a 10-year veteran of the
department.

Police have said the 36-year-old Herbert was retrieving road spikes from his
trunk to try to stop Nero when Nero's vehicle struck the patrol car head-on,
pushing it into the officer.

The chase started when an officer tried to talk to Nero about a disturbance
earlier that evening at his family's Beaumont home. Nero had threatened to hurt
his family and others.
