Bill to Deny State Funding for Unofficial Travel 3/14/13

AUSTIN, Texas - Texas lawmakers are considering whether elected
officials should reimburse taxpayers for security costs related to unofficial
travel.
Republican Rep. Lyle Larson presented his bill to the House State Affairs
Committee on Wednesday, saying it is common sense.
Gov. Rick Perry ran up a $3.7 million security bill while running for
president in 2012. His office says state troopers need to travel with him for
his safety. But Larson said all of the other candidates paid for their own
security costs. He said other governors also reimburse the state for security
costs.
Two Republican and two Democratic lawmakers joined Larson in supporting the
bill. No one spoke against the bill.
Under the measure, the ethics commission would decide when there is a
disagreement over whether the travel was official or unofficial.
