$5B Added To Texas Budget Under Senate Plan 3/14/13

Associated Press
March 14. 2013

Austin, Tx. - Budget writers in the Texas Senate are adding $5 billion in proposed spending that throws more money at everything from education to mental health.

The Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday unanimously approved $94.1 billion in general revenue spending for 2014-15. Chairman Tommy Williams wants the spending bill on the floor of the Senate chamber by next week.

Two months after revealing a budget draft that critics slammed as unnecessarily lean, the Senate will now consider $1.4 billion more in public school spending and another $240 million for mental health.

Williams says there is now less than $1 billion in room under the spending cap. Democrats are still after more money for public education.
