West Texas School District Accused of Cheating 3/10/13

Associated Press
March 10, 2013

EL PASO, Texas (AP) - A state audit is accusing some educators at a West Texas school district of cheating on federal accountability standards.

The El Paso Times (http://bit.ly/ZsdWCN) reports that auditors from the Texas Education Agency have concluded that the number of limited English-proficient students at the high school in the Canutillo Independent School District was manipulated during the 2010 and 2011 school years.

Jim Fry, the former Canutillo high school principal, denies he participated in manipulating student data and says he's being used as a scapegoat.

Damon Murphy, the former Canutillo superintendent who resigned under pressure in December, declined to comment, telling the newspaper he had not seen the audit.

A Texas Education Agency spokesman defended the audit report.

The Canutillo school district, with 6,000 students, is located just northwest of El Paso.
