42 Syrian Troops Killed in Iraq Ambush 3/4/13

Associated Press
3/4/13

BAGHDAD (AP) - Officials in Iraq say they believe al-Qaida in Iraq, not Syrian rebels, were behind an ambush in the western province of Anbar today that left at least 42 Syrian soldiers dead.

The Syrian troops had sought refuge in Iraq following clashes with rebels in their home country. A senior military intelligence official said the attackers appeared to have been tipped off about the soldiers' movements and prepared a well-coordinated attack involving roadside bombs and rocket-propelled grenades.

Iraqi officials have repeatedly warned that violence from Syria's civil war could spill across the border.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to release the information to reporters.
