SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - Officials say a 46-year-old Texas man died in the
frigid waters of the San Francisco Bay just moments after the start of the
Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon.
Race officials said in a statement that they have reason to believe the man
from Austin died of a massive heart attack in Sunday's race, which was held
months earlier than previous years and in far colder waters.
The statement says the death is the first in the 33-year history of the
event, which begins with a 1.5-mile swim from the site of the former federal
prison followed by an 18-mile bike ride and an 8-mile run through San Francisco.
The unidentified man was pulled from the water and CPR was performed, but he
could not be revived.
