MARFA, TX – Today members of the Grand Companions Humane Society began rescuing more than 20 dogs found neglected in a small Marfa trailer.

The no kill shelter in Fort Davis is taking on the price of nursing these animals back to health. But absorbing the cost of the pets is putting the shelter in a difficult position.

After hours of struggling, one by one workers at Grand Companions caged about 15 dogs.

Today these rescuers formed human chains and climbed under the trailer to bring these neglected pets to safety.

“I think that it is a very sad situation. I think that for things to get in a condition like this…assistance could of come a lot sooner,” said Executive Director of Grand Companions Laura Langhem.

More than 20 dogs lived in this small trailer. They were found trapped in rooms, living in their own feces without water or food.

It’s a problem this humane society says happens far too often in small communities.

“ It's very difficult for these communities in this really wide region to be able to have the resources to come together, to hit the targeted people that need our help,” said Langhem.

Today the Presidio County Sheriff's Department says they contacted the owner and will file criminal charges for animal cruelty.

"We are working on the case. We talked to the individual, the owner, today and he gave us permission to pick up the dogs. We’re working to file charges on that individual," said Presidio County Sheriff Danny Dominguez.

Grand Companions Humane Society is preparing to spade, neuter, vaccinate and micro chip each animal. They will also treat them for other conditions they may have.

It’s an expense they weren't expecting but it’s a challenge they say they're willing to take on.

The owner of the dogs is currently in Odessa. The sheriff's department says they will not press charges until he returns to Marfa.

Sheriff Dominquez says in the future, they plan to respond sooner to cases of animal cruelty such as this one.
