Authorities Investigating Death in Texas Corn Silo 2/24/13
February 24, 2013
EDINBURG, Texas (AP) - Authorities are conducting a questionable death investigation after the body of a 21-year-old worker was found in a South Texas corn silo.
Edinburg police spokesman Oscar Trevino told the McAllen Monitor that the department is conducting the investigation in conjunction with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
The body of Oscar Arellano of Pharr was located 15 feet below the surface of an Azteca Milling silo that contained corn refuse. Firefighters had to drain the container to find the body.
The facility did not have a permit that would have allowed a worker to perform tasks inside the silo, Edinburg Fire Chief Shawn Snider said.
A company statement said it is working with local, state and federal officials to determine the cause of the accident.
