When this season began, Latter Rain basketball coach John Johnson had no idea what to expect.
"We didn't have a conference, and we didn't have a league," he said. "Being an ex-basketball player I know that at one point you have to have something that you're shooting for. Latter Rain hadn't won a game in that past 2 or 3 years, so."
He wanted the Knights to be competitive in their first real season. So, in the summer, he recruited local kids that could play, but needed some help.
"Kinda just watched around and just talked to the guys to see what their situation was," Johnson said. "To put positive re-enforcement in the way that it needs to come from, from the Bible. At the same time, while the kids are accomplishing and getting a good education as well."
Now, the Latter Rain Knights are in the post season.
"We became a part of TCAF, and from day one when we signed up with them we've been shooting for a state championship," Johnson said enthusiastically.
Creating a culture of discipline and success hasn't been sunshine and rainbows. But something has clicked for this team.
"New players, they had to start learning each other, start just saying, 'Hey, okay, I know I can do this...but I need to work on him and use his strength," said Johnson. "You know, they have all just come around each other so we can start winning. I mean, winning 20 games says a lot about how they've come together and started working hard together."
The Latter Rain Knights won their first playoff game last night 74-70. They play again tonight, February 22 at 7:30.
