Woods, McIlroy Fall in Match Play First Round 2/22/13

Associated Press
2/22/13

MARANA, Ariz. - After Wednesday's snow day, first-round play resumed in the PGA's Match Play Championship and it was a short week for Tiger Woods. Charles Howell III beat Woods, one of four top seeds in the 64-man field, 2 and 1 in the first round.

Woods had company in leaving early. Another No. 1 seed, Rory McIlroy, also fell in the first round to unheralded Shane Lowry, 1-up. It was the first time since 2002 when the top two seeds were eliminated after one day - even though this round took two days because of snow.

Another top seed, Luke Donald, barely survived. He made a birdie putt on the 18th hole to edge Marcel Siem, 1-up.

The final No. 1 seed, Louis Oosthuizen (WUHST'-hy-zehn) beat Scotland's Richie Ramsey, 2-up.

Action was halted Wednesday when a freak winter storm dropped two inches of snow on the course in Arizona.

Other first-round winners were Sergio Garcia, Matt Kuchar (KOO'-char), Ian Poulter, Bo Van Pelt, Russell Henley, Jason Day, Richard Sterne, Hunter Mahan (MAY'-han), Justin Rose, Nicolaus Colsaerts, Tim Clark, Thorbjorn Olsesen, Bubba Watson, Jim Furyk (FYOOR'-ihk), Fredrik Jacobsen (YAHK'-ub-sihn), Nick Watney, Alexander Noren, Graeme McDowell, Webb Simpson, Peter Hanson, Robert Garrigus and Scott Piercy. Two matches did not finish due to darkness.
