Mike Barker

CBS 7 Closer Look

February 5, 2013

Odessa - An Odessa murder suspect had his birthday celebration at a local restaurant cut short when he was arrested. Ector District Attorney Bobby Bland says his investigator, Joe Commander, spotted the suspect as he was leaving the restaurant. The investigator had seen a mug shot of the suspect just days before he was about to begin the hunt for the man. Commander called for back up from U.S. Marshall Brent Sheets, a co-member of the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force. Bland told CBS 7 Closer Look that Commander was definitely excited when he telephoned Bland from the restaurant with news of the impending arrest. The two officers arrested a surprised Curtis Johnson for the 2011 robbery and murder of Odessan Evan Fitts. Johnson's co-defendent, Trevor Atchinson, was arrested following the murder. He remains in the Ector County Detention Center under bond of 750-thousand-dollars charged with Capital Murder, Aggravated Robbery and Engaging in Organized Crime. Meanwhile, Curtis Johnson has joined his alleged partner in jail. He is charged with murder. Bond was set at half a million dollars.
